Body and Space
“Whether we automate production or make things with our hands, we produce with the body in mind. The body familiar to itself communicates to the world in a comparative way. It seeks relationship – positioning itself in terms of rank and scale in pursuit of fulfilling its needs and desires. The tendencies toward automated production and other technological movements demonstrate movement away from direct bodily interaction. It is important to be aware of the self-consciousness we tend to exhibit towards technology. The sophistication with which we create patterns and systems in our consumption of products, especially information products, trick us into thinking this is a creative activity. A generic character begins to evolve in many of the objects and relationships which surround us. We can become seduced by a market culture “as if” it were an actual human being.”
